Help for foster kitties! Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 10:27 pm
[info]alex_to_you, posting in [info]kittypix
I just recently became a foster mommy for two wonderful bengal kitties. They are both 2 1/2 years old. I was told by the previous owner that Brooklyn (a snow bengal) is completely lost when she isn't with Bella (a tabby bengal). They usually get along and were supposed to be adopted out together. This is only day two, but for whatever reason, Bella has been hissing and growling at Brooklyn. So Brooklyn basically doesn't want to come out from under my bed, and she is very scared. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas as to why two kitties who were inseparable before now don't get along? I was keeping both of them in my room, but I decided to let Bella out so that Brooklyn could rest and not be freaking out so much. Bella has met my two (non-foster) kitties and nothing major has happened. It's just strange that she is hissing at her "sister." To make it legal, I'll include a picture of one of my kitties (not the foster ones, gonna take pictures once they are acclimated).

This is Lyle. He is our kitty ambassador. He likes to make friends with all the kitties and creatures that come across his path in our neighborhood. He saw the two foster kitties, sniffed their stuff, and just walked away. He wasn't even fazed. haha. I love my kitty!

And now back to work. I update at the end of each chapter, btw, in case you were wondering.

Also? Duff is much better this morning. He had a shot of antiobiotics and I put icky green prednisone cream on his suture scar. It's already looking improved.

Tomorrow (Or Is It Today) Is A New Day Jul. 24th, 2008 @ 12:12 am

Phew. The Mets won. I think the people at the gym thought I was a freak since I kept walking up to the TV to check the score. I had taken my glasses off b/c they kept slipping off and I had to squint. I'm sure it was funny. I have to "skip" tomorrow cause I'm not getting up at 5am to go to the gym and we're hanging out at my parents tomorrow night.

I'm officially stuck in my writing. I can't get past this chunk of chapter. I don't know what to do with it. The idea I'm toying with just doesn't feel like it's working. I think the book ends of the chapter are good, it's the middle it weak. I might play with it tonight for a few minutes before I go to bed.

Edit: 1:43am: I can be such a wuss, I jammed through it. I don't know if I'm happy with it and will look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow. I wound up adding 300 words from draft 3a to draft 4a.

Tomorrow is facing up to be a busy day.

Obama-wan Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 08:50 pm
[info]barthanderson
I finally got around to reading Ryan Lizza's piece on Barack Obama in the New Yorker this week. WIth the hoo-ha about the cover illustration, one might never know that there was a kick-ass article inside.

I highly recommend this one, if you want to (a) read an account of a political predator's rise through the ranks, (b) get a taste for politics-as-bloodsport, Chicago-style, or (c) want a clearer picture of Obama than has so far been painted in the press. It's no secret that he's not the progressive that many thought he was, but I must admit I was surprised by what a Machiavellian opportunist Obama is apparently. Indeed many old allies don't want much to do with him because he's failed to "bring his constituency" with him in his meteoric rise.

As for Hillary supporters' charge that Obama's a light weight speechifier? Hardly. This guy's a shark. The story of how he won his state senate seat should put that notion to rest (I thought that was the most riveting part of Lizza's article).

From what I've seen as a detached observor of easily the most fascinating election season in my lifetime, McCain doesn't know what he's up against. And judging by this article anyway, most democrats don't know who they're nominee really is.

I'm watching TV. Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 10:32 pm
[info]swan_tower
It's funny, realizing just how long it's been since I had to remember to turn the TV on at a particular time, on a particular channel, because I wanted to watch something current.

I watch a lot of TV, but 99.9% of it is on DVD, after the season is over. Commercials annoy the snot out of me; I like being able to hit pause and wander off to get a drink; I like watching the show at my own pace (which is often "marathon"). But when my mother was here a few weeks ago, we watched So You Think You Can Dance, and -- gasp -- I've continued to watch it since then.

Here's why I like the show. (The dance thing, obviously, but there's more to it than that.)

For starters, they're doing a pretty good job of being open to all kinds of styles, from ballroom to ballet to street. Not only can you potentially get on the show whether you're swing or crunk, once you're there, they'll make you operate outside of your safety zone. So we get hip-hop guys doing the foxtrot, and ballerinas grunging it up, and some of them adapt spectacularly. (It also, as a corollary, means that the show has a higher degree of racial diversity than I've seen practically anywhere on TV. I predict that once this week's cuts are made, there won't be any white guys left -- and the only one remaining is a Hawaiian guy who looks like he has more than just Europeans in his ancestry.)

Also, until they get down to the last 10, the cuts are made by both popular and judge decision. That is, viewers vote, and then the bottom slice of contestants solo before the judges boot one guy and one girl. This guarantees that when you get to the final stages of the show, everybody left is actually good. You may have preferred someone who got cut, but the remaining dancers are at least worthy.

Which means that the later stages of the show are really friendly instead of vicious and cut-throat, at least as seen on TV. Tonight's episode was one big love-in, with the judges raving about what beautiful dancers all of them are; even when they criticize, they often do it apologetically, with references to all the other wonderful things the dancer is capable of, even if they failed at the current routine. And since the contestants have to dance in pairs, whatever sniping may go on backstage, you don't see it out front; trying to undercut your partner is about the stupidest move you could make. The best way to look good is to make the person you're with look good. There's no Donald Trump being an asshole at the contestants, no fake conflict generated to boost ratings.

So what you're left with is a lot of friendly people creating beautiful and diverse art.

For that, I remind myself to turn on the TV every Wednesday at 8 p.m. It's worth the effort.

Sorry to spam! I got the go ahead from the people I live with to bring home the kittens. But I still have to get approval from the barn owner. Fingers crossed, pray for me!

My question is that if ::knock on wood:: I am able to get them out, what do I need to get them tested for? Besides FLV/FIV. Other than that, is there anything that is mandatory? I live on a budget, unfortunately, and I just need to make sure that the kittens can't give my two other cats anything. I will pour money into getting their fluids up at the vet (how does that work? would they have to stay overnight?) and buying formula/kitten food.

Thank you all so much for your help. I appreciate it so much.

Okay, so... I know I'm one of the few, weird people in the world who actually didn't care for Cowboy Bebop, but... didn't Fox already have a shot with what was essentially a live-action version of it?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they did. I think it was called Firefly.

Note: This post NOT intended to offend the 98% of the universe that loves Cowboy Bebop. You gotta admit the thematic similarities are totally there, at least from what little I've seen. But, honestly, Fox having rights to anything has long since proven to be a bad thing... so mostly this is my "damn that sucks, I'm sorry your show is about to get reamed through the ass by Fox" post for y'all.

Note to Fox: No, I still haven't forgiven you for Firefly. Or for the 1996 Doctor Who fiasco (although I will say that Paul McGann = awesome, and the whole thing was very much not his fault, and in fact I quite liked the movie... and thus am even more angry at you for totally reaming it and not giving it a chance to, y'know, actually succeed on the American market, you asshats). Or for allowing Chris Carter to keep running the X-Files into the ground through the last two disastrous seasons.

And you are so not getting any money from me on the new X-Files movie until I hear a good review from someone not related in any way to the movie. So there.

Hal Spacejock thuds down in Scotland Jul. 24th, 2008 @ 08:47 am
[info]halspacejock
Sarah Wise from The Creaking Shelves Bookshop in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, was so determined to see Hal Spacejock available in the UK that she ordered in a whole batch of Hal books to sell through the shop.

Due to freight costs they're a little more expensive than locally printed titles, but she's cut the price as low as she can without actually losing money on each book.

You'll find her blog post about the arrivals here, including a link to the shop's website and ordering info.

If you live in the UK and have been hanging out for Hal, this is your best chance to get hold of the books. I know it's a cliche, but stocks really are limited and some of the copies have already been pre-sold.

EDIT: I forgot to mention they're all signed copies.

McCain thinks that Iraq and Pakistan share a border, and that the "Anbar Awakening" of 2007 occurred after the Surge (and that the Surge was responsible for it...).

And we're supposed to think he'd be the best Commander-in-Chief? Really?

How Hard Is This To Understand? Jul. 23rd, 2008 @ 07:21 pm
[info]ebenstone
I was a member of a ASOIAF community that I quit because they are advocates of fan fiction. How much clearer can it be made that GRRM doesn't want fanfic based in Westeros. For readers of my blog this is copy and pasted directly from Ran's site:

Q. Can I post fan fiction?

A. Definitely not. Short stories set in Westeros or using characters from "A Song of Ice and Fire" are not to be posted here (and if you've written one, don't even _mention_ the fact). GRRM doesn't approve of fan fiction, so we honor his wishes on the board concerning this. Taking this a step further, individuals who are aware of fan fiction elsewhere should not point users of the forum to it. This includes linking to fan fiction in your personal profiles, or linking to a site that links in turn to fan fiction. Failure to observe these rules will lead to a warning at minimum.

If that's the case for the message board endorsed by George, why would others think that it's okay.

I also wonder if newer fans find us old skool, ezboard fans annoying?

This video made me cry! It's a true story (I believe, anyway)about a Baby lion that grew up and got released into the wild in Africa and then reunited a year later with it's human providers that saved him. Watch it's reaction.
