Terrible News: Kai badly hurt
On Tuesday morning we came downstairs to a sight that all cat owners dread - large quantities of blood smeared all over the kitchen floor and our cat - Kai - lying very still in the middle of it all. This time the blood didn't belong to a mouse or a rabbit. It belonged to Kai.

We took him to the vet first thing and watched as the vet shaved and cleaned the mass of matted fur and puncture wounds around the underside of Kai's back legs and tail. He'd been bitten severely and cut in several places and had lost a lot of blood. His tail - which was one of the seven fluffy wonders of the feline world - was broken and paralyzed. And worse it looked like one of the cuts had damaged his urinary tract. He was operated on for almost an hour.

We took him home and explained that even James Bond has to wear a plastic cone around his head when he gets shot. Kai was not amused. He slept all of Tuesday, not eating or drinking. We got him to take some water by forcing a syringe into his mouth. But he was still bleeding and it was fifty fifty whether he was going to make it through the night.

The next day we took him back to the vet where he was put on anti-haemorrhagics and prescribed a liquid food concentrate. He's still on both. We've been feeding him by syringe every two hours since Wednesday. He's stopped bleeding but is still listless and most unKai-like. He can just about walk - when absolutely necessary - but spends most of the time led out asleep.

He may lose his tail but at the moment all we want is for him to recover.

That's absolutely awful. I presume he had had a fight with another cat or a wild animal of some sort? Here's lots of good vibes in all your directions. I so can relate to all that.

*big gentle human hugs for you and your wife*

Tell him even the biggest celebrities go on the liquid diet to help keep them looking fabulous. *nods*

Every day his prognosis improves. As long as he will eat/cooperate with the syringe feeding, you can help him get well. Part of his listlessness may be pain, so you may want to check with your vet about a low dose of opiate analgesic.

From my sick cat to yours: "many helpings of tuna to get well soon!" (Sorry, my translation may be off -- it could be "purrings to you, get well soon", or it could be "feed me now, foolish human".)

Good luck from across the pond.

I've been following your blog for the kitten guides for some time now and very much enjoy hearing about your cats' lives. This is so terrible, but I'm glad you found Kai before it was too late. Sending good vibes and all the virtual salmon in the world!

I second the part about the feeding

We've twice had to feed one of our cats via a syringe (via a tube in the throat--not sure if that's what you're doing), when she stopped eating. Fortunately, getting food into her belly regularly by secret tube kept her system remembering what nourishment was like and eventually she started eating again.

Oh dear god. What happened? What hurt him?

All best for his recovery, from me and from my two fluffies, and Boboko adds that living with a short tail is not the end of the world... just live and be happy.

I hope that everything's going to be okay. I'll be thinking about him.

Tell Kai he has to live, to get revenge and redeem his reputation as indestructible.

I've so much enjoyed your posts about the cats and your life, and it wouldn't be the same without Kai. I'm sending him lots of good thoughts and healing energy, and hope he'll soon be back to saving the world. (By the way, tell him that some lady kitties find a short tail to be very sexy! Battle scars and all, you know.)

I am so sorry for his pain. I have had a pet of my own that was attacked so I know how it feels. My thoughts are with you and Kai. If it is acceptable to you and your beliefs I would like to send energy to him.
