Lambing 2008
Lambing is officially underway. It's due to start Wednesday but as usual no one told the ewes who all look enormous. Yesterday we caught up Nice Ewe - who's due on Wednesday - and moved her into the deluxe maternity stable ward. Today we set up the LambCam so we can monitor her remotely from the house (and, as the camera has a microphone, listen to her as well. So for the next ten days* I'm going to have the 24 hour Sheep Channel live by my bed - and you would not believe how noisy a sheep grinding her teeth can be:)

Rest assured there will be lamb pictures.

*I do get a respite Friday thru Monday as I'm off to the Phoenix convention in Dublin where I'm a guest.

Strange. Lambing up here has not only started but on some farms is almost finished. My friend's at Kadaka Talu (Juniper Farm) had a ewe reject her lamb so they took it home with them. It now sleeps in a box in the kitchen because the dog does and can't quite decide if it is a dog, cat or human.

As part of the local Saare Mahe (Organic Farmers Union) they will keep it as the show lamb they take to fairs and meetings over the summer.

I look forward to your photos.

We choose to lamb in late March to coincide with the spring grass. We have lambed in early January (by mistake - blame the ram:) but it's more risky as the cold weather can kill lambs and you have to buy in more feed. Commercial farmers risk it to take advantage of the Easter lamb meat prices.

There are some all year round lambing breeds like Portlands.
